The Divine Commandments
As the people of Israel stood at the base of the mountain, the air crackled with an unearthly power. Lightning split the sky, and a deep rumble of thunder shook the ground beneath them. Then, from the midst of the storm, God’s voice rang out, powerful and absolute.
"I am the LORD your God," He declared, His voice carrying over the trembling crowd. "I brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.
"You must not make for yourself any carved image—no likeness of anything in heaven, on earth, or in the waters below. Do not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. The consequences of sin pass down through the generations, but to those who love Me and keep My commandments, My mercy extends to thousands."
A hush fell over the people, their hearts pounding as He continued, each word an unshakable decree.
"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for those who do will not be held blameless.
"Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Work six days, but on the seventh, you shall rest. This is not only for you, but for your children, your servants, even your livestock, and the foreigners among you. For in six days, I made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but on the seventh, I rested. I blessed this day and made it holy.
"Honor your father and mother, that you may live long in the land I am giving you.
"You shall not murder.
"You shall not commit adultery.
"You shall not steal.
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
"You shall not covet—neither your neighbor’s house, wife, servant, ox, donkey, nor anything that belongs to them."
The people trembled as the mountain quaked before them. Smoke curled into the heavens, and the sound of a trumpet grew louder and louder. Overwhelmed by fear, they shrank back, pleading with Moses.
"You speak with us, and we will listen," they begged. "But do not let God speak to us directly, or we will die!"
Moses turned to them, his expression calm and steady. "Do not be afraid," he reassured them. "God has come to test you, so that His fear will remain with you and keep you from sinning."
Even as he spoke, the people kept their distance, watching as Moses stepped forward, drawing near to the thick darkness where God’s presence dwelled.
Instructions for Worship
Then the LORD spoke to Moses again. "Tell the Israelites: You have seen with your own eyes that I have spoken to you from heaven. Do not make idols of silver or gold to stand beside Me.
"Build for Me an altar of earth, and on it, offer your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and oxen. Wherever My name is honored, I will come to you and bless you.
"If you build an altar of stone, do not carve it with tools, for in doing so, you will defile it. And do not approach My altar by steps, lest your nakedness be exposed upon it."
Laws for Justice and Mercy
The LORD then gave Moses laws to govern the people.
"If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve for six years, but in the seventh, he shall go free without paying anything. If he was single when he came, he shall leave alone; if he was married, his wife shall go with him. But if his master gave him a wife who bore him children, the wife and children shall remain with the master, and the man shall go free alone.
"If the servant declares, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I do not want to go free,’ then his master shall bring him before the judges. He shall be taken to the doorpost, and his ear shall be pierced with an awl as a sign that he will serve for life.
"If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to be freed as the male servants are. If she does not please her master, he must allow her to be redeemed. He cannot sell her to foreigners, for that would be a betrayal. If he selects her for his son, he must treat her as a daughter.
"If a man takes another wife, he must not neglect the first one’s food, clothing, or marital rights. If he fails in these, she shall go free without cost."
God then laid down laws concerning violence and personal injury.
"Whoever strikes and kills another person must be put to death. But if it was unintentional, I will provide a place where they may flee. However, if anyone deliberately kills another with malice, they must be taken from My altar and put to death.
"Whoever strikes their father or mother must be put to death.
"Whoever kidnaps another person, whether they sell them or keep them, must be put to death.
"Whoever curses their father or mother must be put to death."
The laws continued, covering injury, property damage, and fair restitution. Each word carried the weight of divine authority.
Laws of Restitution and Fairness
"If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt. But if it happens after sunrise, bloodguilt shall be upon the one who struck him.
"If a man lets his livestock graze in another man’s field, he must make restitution from his own best produce.
"If fire spreads and burns another’s field or crops, the one who started the fire must compensate the owner.
"If a man entrusts money or goods to a neighbor and it is stolen, the thief, if caught, must pay double. If the thief is not found, the owner must swear before the judges that he did not steal it himself."
The LORD continued to set laws of justice, governing honesty, compensation, and moral responsibility. Then He added solemn warnings.
"You shall not mistreat a foreigner, for you were once foreigners in Egypt.
"You shall not oppress a widow or an orphan. If you do and they cry out to Me, I will hear them, and My anger will burn against you. I will make your wives widows and your children orphans.
"If you lend money to the poor, do not charge interest. If you take a man’s cloak as collateral, return it before sunset, for it is his only covering. If he cries out to Me, I will hear him, for I am compassionate.
"You shall not revile God or curse the ruler of your people.
"You must bring the first of your harvest to Me. You are to be holy to Me and must not eat meat torn by wild animals; instead, give it to the dogs."
As Moses listened, he knew that these were not merely laws—they were the foundation of a nation under God. And the people, standing in fear and awe, knew that they had been given something sacred.
The laws had been spoken. The covenant had begun.
